Arena Catchup Call – 004

Yo yo yo!

Man… this session was a lot of fun!

We started off on time and we spent the whole session filling out a mini game design document. Honestly, I’m gonna stop talking so much and get people to do stuff!

By the end of the session, we all had made good progress on our Mini GDDs!

We started by exploring the iterative nature of the game design process. Then, we looked at the Mini GDD.

Mini Game Design Document

Fill in these prompts to create your mini game design document.

One Liner

You play as X who wants to do Y, but can’t because of Z.

Details

  1. What kind of fun are you trying to create?
  2. What’s the theme or setting?
  3. What’s the goal?
  4. What are the obstacles or challenges?
  5. How do players interact with each other?
  6. What are the core actions players can do?
  7. What are the meaningful decisions players make?
  8. What are the rules of the game?

After all that, we walked through key elements: game concept, core fun, theme/setting, goals, obstacles, player interactions and core actions.

I’m pretty sure I mentioned my insecurities and The Wheel of Time. Again.

We then looked at how to refine these ideas – this happens by building prototypes and playtesting. Then, we take the stuff we learned in the process to build the next iteration.

Finally, before wrapping up the call, we spoke about having a coworking session between the calls so that we get stuff done. I also floated the idea of changing the sessions to Sunday nights so that others can make it to the Arena sessions too.

Let’s see how this pans out.

And finally, I remembered to take a pic before the call ended! Muahahahah!

Our Quest
